The Decemberists explore a new sound on their inspired 8th studio album I’ll Be Your Girl. The acclaimed Portland, Oregon‐based band (with nearly 2M adj. albums sales) worked with producer
John Congleton (St. Vincent, Lana del Ray) & embraced influences such as Roxy Music and New Order to spark a new creative path, as evidenced on synth‐driven lead single “Severed.”
There’s a riot going on. You don’t need me, or Yo La Tengo, to tell you that. These are dark times, in our heads as much as in the streets. It’s easy to lose contact with the ground. Confusion and anxiety intrude into daily life and cause you to lose your compass. There are times that call for anthems, something to lift you out of your slump and put fire in your feet. And sometimes what is needed is a balm, a sound that will wrap around you and work out the knots in your neck.
For Yo La Tengo, this is a slow-motion action painting. Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew did it all themselves, in their rehearsal studio, with no engineer and no complicated equipment (John McEntire later assisted in mixing). They did not rehearse together beforehand; they turned on the recorder and let things coalesce. Songs came together over long stretches, sometimes as much as a year going by between parts. You’d never guess this, since the layers are joined with such a liquid brush. You’d imagine most of the songs had sprung forth whole, since they will enter your head that way. Within two listens you will be powerless to resist the magnetic draw of “Shades of Blue,” will involuntarily hear “She May, She Might” on your internal jukebox first thing in the morning and “Let’s Do It Wrong” late at night.
While there’s a riot going on, Yo La Tengo will remind you what it’s like to dream. The sound burbles and washes and ows and billows. If records were dedicated to the cardinal elements, this one would be water. There are shimmery hazes, spectral rumbles, a ash of backward masking. You are there. And even if your mind is not unclouded--shaken, misdirected, out of words and out of time--you can still float, ride the waves of an ocean deeper than your worries, above the sound and above the Sound.
Canadian multi‐platinum, award‐winning singer/songwriter, best‐selling author, radio host, actor, activist, and social media star Jann Arden reveals her latest studio album, These Are The Days, recorded at Vancouver’s Warehouse studios with legendary producer Bob Rock at the helm.
These Are The Days was heralded by the September release of the 1st featured song “A Long Goodbye”, a poignant reflection on the gradual disappearance of a loved one suffering from dementia‐related illness, a theme also central to Arden’s most recent book, Feeding My Mother – Comfort and Laughter in the Kitchen as My Mom Lives with Memory Loss. Additionally,
Jann has released a compelling lyric video for ‘Everybody’s Pulling on Me’.
“Occasionally ‐ if the stars align ‐ you get the chance to make the perfect album. And when I say perfect ‐ what feels perfect to yourself as an artist. I have worked with Bob Rock several times but in all those years we have never written a single song together,” admits Arden. “We decided to try it out ‐ we met in Maui, where he lives ‐ and wrote four songs. We got together twice more in Vancouver and wrote another nine. Most of them ended up on this record. I really believe they are the culmination of best of both of us. I feel like it’s my best work in twenty years and I hope you do too.”
Jann Arden has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and is an inductee of the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and the Western Canadian Music Alliance Hall of Fame. She is recipient of the Vantage Women of Originality Award and, in 2012, was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. This winter, Arden will add one more accolade to her growing list of accomplishments, when she receives the Bob Edwards Award, named in honour of the late Canadian satirist and humourist. In doing so she joins the ranks of notables such as Mordecai Richler, Margaret Atwood and W.O. Mitchell.
Swami John Reis and Rick Froberg have been making noises together since high school. In 1986 it was the post-hardcore chime of Pitchfork. In 1991 it was the sprawling, multi-faceted arrangements of Drive Like Jehu. In 1999 it was the lean, mean swagger of Hot Snakes. Reis and Froberg are responsible for some of the most turbulent rock and roll of their, or any, generation.
Hot Snakes streamlined Jehu’s complex compositions and emerged as bona fide downstroke warlords. They made 3 studio albums of high-velocity, slash-your-face, piss-punk: 2000’s Automatic Midnight, 2002’s Suicide Invoice and 2004’s Audit in Progress. The band ceased activity in 2005 but reunited for a triumphant world tour in 2011, planting the seeds for what has cum.
Now, after a 14-year hiatus from the studio, Hot Snakes have kicked down the door back into our lives with their new album, Jericho Sirens. Fresh, warm piss, bottled and sold as lube.
“I considered stopping playing guitar on a social media poll after I completely mastered the instrument,” Reis says. “But so many people kept sending me letters and voicemail messages, asking me at the dry cleaners, or the butcher shop to bring back Hot Snakes. They were missing rock and roll music. I’ve always considered Hot Snakes to be more in the vein of the proto-Vog movement of the early ‘70s. But to these people, this is their rock ‘n’ roll. I understand that. I totally understand people’s desire to be controlled and humiliated by my guitar. Anyone can play the stupid guitar. What they want is for me to use it as a branding iron.”
The new album blasts out of the speakers with the furious “I Need a Doctor,” inspired by Froberg’s experience needing a doctor’s note in order to miss an important work function. “Yeah, I had to be quick on my feet,” says Rick. “Luckily a friend had a stack of stationary from Planned Parenthood and I used that to forge a note relieving me of my obligation to go to a really lame Christmas party at a karaoke joint.”
Throughout Jericho Sirens, Froberg commiserates with the frustration and torrential apathy that seems to be a fixture in our daily lives, while also reminding us that we have no fucking clue. “Songs like ‘Death Camp Fantasy’ and ‘Jericho Sirens’ are about that,” he says. “No matter where you look, there’re always people saying the world’s about to end. Every movie is a disaster movie. I’m super fascinated by it. It is hysterical, and it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. It snowballs, like feedback, or my balls on the windshield.”
Musically, the album incorporates the most extreme fringes of the Hot Snakes sound (the vein-bulging, 78-second “Why Don’t It Sink In?” the manic, Asian Blues on speed of “Having Another?”), while staying true to longstanding influences such as the Wipers, Dead Moon, Michael Jackson, and Suicide on propulsive tracks such as “Six Wave Hold-Down,” one of the first songs written for the project during a Mummer Parade 2017 session in Philadelphia. Other moments like the choruses of “Jericho Sirens” and “Psychoactive” nod to Status Quo and AC/DC with Froberg admitting, “I still flip bird and ride my BMX on top of cop cars.”
“My muse was love. It sounds like panic and chaos,” Reis says. “Restlessness and unease. That’s a sound that I would ask for. I want that record. The inspiration would be simple, maybe even kind of straightforward. Very early rock ‘n’ roll DNA with lots of rules. I would find some note or rhythm in it that captivated me and I dwelled on it and bent it. That’s where I found dissonance. Bending and rubbing against each other uncomfortably. Marinate and refine. A lot of the other Hot Snakes records always had tension and release, but this one is mainly just tension.”
Jericho Sirens was recorded in short bursts over the past year, mostly in San Diego and Philadelphia with longtime bassist Gar Wood, Jason Kourkounis and Mario Rubalcaba, both of whom drummed on prior Hot Snakes releases but never on the same one. For Reis, reactivating his creative partnership with Froberg was one of the most rewarding aspects of the process: “Our perspectives are similar. Our tastes are similar. He is my family. And what more is there to say? My favorite part of making this record was hearing him find his voice and direction for this record. I came hard.”
In tandem with a full back catalog reissue series and the new album, Hot Snakes will return to the road in 2018 to incinerate the villages, and they’re already looking ahead to more music. Says Gar Wood, “There’re already 2 more records written and recorded. We wanted to come out with this one using the more mainstream sounding stuff to give people a chance to catch up.”

Stone Temple Pilots have announced its highly anticipated, new self-titled album, Stone Temple Pilots. This marks the band's first album with the new lead singer, Jeff Gutt. Despite being one of the best-selling bands of the 1990s with platinum records and a Grammy to its credit, guitarist Dean DeLeo says, " This new incarnation of STP is focused on what lies ahead. The best way for us to honor our past is to build on it and keep making new music." The band does just that on Stone Temple Pilots. Straight-ahead rockers like the first single "Meadow" and "Never Enough" channels the gritty guitars and swaggering rhythms that STP perfected on Core (1992), Purple (1994), and No. 4 (1999). "Roll Me Under" glides along a nimble bass line before slamming hard into gear during the chorus, where Gutt's muscular baritone roars against a rage of power chords.
He’s biked across the country, headlined some of Canada’s most celebrated stages and now, two-time JUNO Award nominee and award-winning artist Jeremy Fisher is trading his late nights for early mornings with the release of his first children’s album – Jeremy Fisher Junior – Highway to Spell.
Driven by the folk-inspired melodies that Fisher is known for, Highway To Spell provides parents with the perfect theme songs for waking up (“Good Morning”), making friends (“Peanut Butter Sandwiches”) and getting ready for bed (“End of the Day”). Filled with sassy saxophones, fluttering flutes and smile-inducing hand claps, each of the album’s twelve tracks challenge its audience to embrace the feeling of being carefree.
Recorded and produced by Fisher in his backyard studio, the album also includes performances by Catriona Sturton (vocals and harmonica), Petr Cancura (sax, clarinet and flute) and a chorus of 16 young singers.
This vinyl is the first pressing since the original 10″ and features the original EP from 1996 with added rare recordings from 7″ singles released between 1994 and 1996.
“After touring my debut, Everything I Long For, across Canada for the better part of two years from 1994-96, I celebrated its imminent International release by developing a strong dislike for the sound of my music. A major sticking point in my negotiations with Outpost Recordings (my US label at the time) was to have the ability to release singles and EPs on my own or through smaller labels. They agreed, and Moving Careful was born from late night obsessions on the third floor of a rented Victorian house in Toronto. Although much of my debut was recorded on a 4-track cassette, I was eager to get back to my Yamaha MT100 II, and very inspired by what Eric’s Trip and Lou Barlow were doing at the time.”
Moving Careful was released on Hardwood/Sonic Unyon in late 1996. Side Two of this 20th Anniversary edition also includes home recordings from the time period, things that Hayden had tucked away and found homes on Canadian Indies like Lunamoth, Landspeed and Squirtgun.

Judas Priest could easily rest on their laurels at this stage of their highly successful and influential career. However, the legendary metal band - singer Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis - refuse to do so as evidenced by the arrival of their eighteenth studio album overall - 'Firepower.' The album is comprised of fourteen tracks of pure and highly inspired metal. And to mark the occasion Priest has reunited with producer Tom Allom (the man behind the board for all of the band’s releases from 1979-1988, including such stellar classics as 'Unleashed in the East', 'British Steel', 'Screaming for Vengeance' and 'Defenders of the Faith') and with Grammy Award-winning producer Andy Sneap also helping to raise the sonic bar even higher.
"Tom Allom has got this classic metal thing," explains Halford. "And Andy is a bit more of a 'modern metal producer' but his thinking is a little bit different to Tom's. And I think to get this balance between that classic old school metal to what Andy's world is was just a remarkable coalescence." “Tom Allom has been with us since 1979, so his knowledge of ourselves and our music in general is immense,” adds Hill. And according to Travis Priest returned back to a recording method that worked incredibly well on the band’s earlier classics - “We went back to the organic way of recording where it’s all of us in a room and we got to play together.”
Automata – Part I unveils the first six songs comprising the entire body of work. Stretching near seven minutes, “Condemned to the Gallows” kicks off this journey. Acoustic guitar builds in epic fashion before sweeping distortion takes hold followed by unpredictable rhythms and a seismic vocal performance which, as Tommy puts it, “sets up the whole story.”
Elsewhere, the trudging eight-minute guitar symphony of “Yellow Eyes” spirals into the melodic bliss of “Millions.”
“There are a lot of moments where we totally venture away from the traditional formula of what a progressive metal band can do,” states Dan. “There are all these little moments where we’ve done something we never did before. ‘Millions’ is the perfect example. It’s four-minutes of straight melody—another first.”
With Automata Part I, Part II, and the myriad of visuals on the horizon, Between The Buried And Me realize their potential to its fullest—and go one step further.
“All of our music should build up to the newest record,” Tommy leaves off. “That’s what happens with Automata. You can take little snippets from our past throughout this album. It sounds like Between The Buried And Me, but it’s still new. We hope to keep the music industry on its toes. This is part of doing that.”

Anomia: [uh-NO-mee-uh] - Noun - 1) A problem with word finding or recall. 2) Chaos. 3) The game where common knowledge becomes uncommonly fun! Anomia plays off the fact that our minds are positively brimming with all sorts of random information; things to eat, pop songs, websites, etc. Sure, under normal circumstances, it's easy enough to give an example of a frozen food, or a dog breed; but you will find that your brain works a little differently under pressure! The directions are simple. Draw a card from the center pile and flip it over. Does the symbol on your card match one on another player's card? If so, you must quickly face-off with the other player by giving an example of the person, place, or thing on their card before they can do the same for yours. If you blurt a correct answer out first, you win their card and drawing continues. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. Wild cards allow unlike symbols to match, increasing the number of things you must pay attention to. Cascading face-offs can occur when you hand over a lost card revealing a new top card on your play pile. All this adds up to a high-energy, hilarious play experience where everyone is involved at all times. Easy to learn, fun to play over and over again, Anomia will have any group of friends, family, even perfect strangers, shouting and laughing out loud as they try to beat each other to the punch! Players: 3-6 players, Ages 10 and up. Goal: To win the most cards by facing-off with other players. Cards: 2 decks. Each deck has 92 unique playing cards and 8 Wild Cards.
