THE BEATLES: ON AIR: LIVE AT THE BBC, VOL. 2

2013 two CD set, the second volume of previously-unreleased BBC recordings by John, Paul, George and Ringo. In the studios of the British Broadcasting Corporation, The Beatles performed music for a variety of radio shows. Live at the BBC presents the sound of The Beatles seizing their moment to play for the nation. Although the songs were recorded ahead of broadcast, allowing for retakes and occasional overdubbing, they are essentially “live in studio” performances. Most of the songs are cover versions of material from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This series presents the Fab Four at their most raw, exciting and energetic.

THE BEATLES: LOVE

Product Description
LOVE, is a fascinating reworking of numerous classic Beatles recordings by the band’s original producer, Sir George Martin and his son Giles. LOVE, is also the title of the highly successful Cirque du Soleil show, a co-production with Apple Corps, featuring the music of The Beatles, currently wowing audiences in Las Vegas. In creating the music for the show and for the album, George and Giles have created a continuous “soundscape” – a series of well-known Beatles songs augmented by additional instrumentation and vocals taken from their vast bank of original multi-track tapes. If you can imagine “Strawberry Fields Forever” beginning with John’s original demo before going into an early take of the song and then climaxing in a musical collage including the piano solo from “in My Life” and the harpsichord pattern from “Piggies” and lots, lots more – or “Get Back”, prefaced by the “Hard Day’s Night” opening guitar chord, the guitar and drum solos from “The End” and segued into “Glass Onion”, you will begin to get the picture. But hearing is believing! The guys have pushed back the boundaries and come up with a brand new work that will add to the enduring legacy of the band. The result is an amazing album that not only reinforces the timeless quality of the group’s recordings – the fans will have fun enjoying the roller coaster experience of the album whilst trying to spot where all the pieces come from. It is also destined to open up a new legion of fans to The Beatles experience.

It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from “Across the Universe.” And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of “Because” enter, followed by snatches from “A Hard Day’s Night” and “The End,” leading into a fired-up “Get Back,” it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs’ former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil’s Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles’ last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, “toppermost of the poppermost.” There’s no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently–some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter”), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin’s willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut ‘n’ paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it’ll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they’ve sounded on CD) and audacious nature. –Thom Allott

THE BEATLES: MEET THE BEATLES (US VERSION)

On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, greeted by scores of screaming, swooning fans who rushed the gate to catch a glimpse of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they took their first steps on American soil. Two nights later, on Sunday, February 9, 73 million viewers in the U.S. and millions more in Canada tuned in to CBS to watch The Beatles make their American television debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show.’ In what remains one of the world’s top-viewed television events of all time, The Beatles performed five songs on the live broadcast and ‘Beatlemania,’ already in full, feverish bloom in The Beatles’ native U.K., was unleashed with blissful fervor across America and around the world. The British Invasion had begun. The U.S. albums were originally issued between 1964 and 1970 by Capitol Records, Apple Records, and United Artists in the United States. These new releases seek to replicate the unique listening experience heard by Americans at the time by preserving the sequences, timings, and artwork found on the albums. Capitol’s engineers in the 1960s took great care to produce what they believed to be the best possible sound for the playback equipment in use at that time. Due to the limitations of the record players of the day, engineers often compressed the sound by raising the volume of the softer passages and lowering the volume for the louder parts of the songs. They also reduced the bass frequencies since too much bass could cause the record to skip. In some cases, reverb was added to the tracks to make them sound more “American.” This album is packaged in a miniature vinyl sleeve that faithfully recreates the original U.S. LP release down to the finest detail, including the inner sleeve. MEET THE BEATLES was originally released January 10, 1964 in the U.S. It spent 11 weeks at No. 1. This album is a limited edition release.

THE BEATLES: LET IT BE..NAKED

Product Description
At last we can hear Let It Be the way it was meant to be, the original masters in their originally intended form, PLUS a bonus, “fly on the wall” disc that presents 25 minutes of music and conversation from the Beatles at work in rehearsal and in the studio.

Amazon.ca
Re-recorded, remixed, overdubbed and repackaged–all before its 1970 American release, mind you–Let It Be has long been the most second-guessed album in the Beatles otherwise sterling catalog. This curious, three-decade-late, stripped-down rethink offers up yet another spin on what started as a back-to-the-roots album/documentary project called Get Back in January, 1969, but ended up as the band’s de facto swan song 18 months later. Paul McCartney in particular has long been irked by producer Phil Spector’s grandiose orchestra and choir overdubs to the title track and “The Long and Winding Road,” and indeed the “bare” versions here have a distinct, plaintive charm lacking in Spector’s typical pomp. All the various snippets of studio and live chatter that seasoned the original have been removed, leaving the recordings to be judged on their essentially live-in-the-studio merits. If the intent was to “de-Spectorize” the album, the inclusion of John Lennon’s 1968 benefit track “Across the Universe” and George Harrison’s “I Me Mine” (which marked the last-ever Beatles session in January, 1970) in their original versions seems equally odd, the legendary producer having appended them to the album’s original track listing in the first place. The rambling “bonus disc” of conversation and song snippets culled from hundreds of hours of session and film tapes may fascinate diehard fans, but it also underscores the murky, often unfocused state of affairs the Fabs found themselves in during the last year of their remarkable career. –Jerry McCulley

The surviving members of the Fab Four spent much of the 1990s belatedly reuniting to document, promote, and occasionally awkwardly burnish their unparalleled pop music legacy. This double-disc anthology of live-in-the-studio performances originally recorded specifically for the BBC during the most frantic years of early Beatlemania was the first chapter in that effort and the first issuance of previously unreleased Beatles recordings since the late ’70s. In many ways, it remains the most artistically revealing. Capturing them at their early ’60s live-performance peak, these recordings pay homage to both the band’s eclectic musical influences (including Chuck Berry, Phil Spector, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Larry Williams, the Coasters, and the Shirelles), and to the enthusiastic and generous sense of musical discovery and the pop proselytizing that accompanied them. A number of the Fabs’ own ’62-’65 singles and album tracks are also featured, but they mostly take a back seat to the generous collection of previously unreleased cover songs included here. The band’s brisk, often irreverent sense of humor also comes to fore in the intros, interviews, and between-song banter. An indispensable part of any true Beatlemaniac’s collection and a superb introduction to the roots of a musical legend. –Jerry McCulley –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
